Colorectal:
Robert K. Cleary, MD
 |
Dr. Cleary, born in Royal Oak, Michigan, graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in 1979. He received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1984, and completed his residency in General Surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1989. A fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery followed at Parkland/Presbyterian Hospitals and was completed in 1992. Dr. Cleary is board certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery as well as General Surgery in addition to being an Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. His special interests include colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disease, and minimally invasive surgery to include laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
Dr. Cleary is also head of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship program at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. For more information regarding the fellowship click here.
Dr. Cleary enjoys coaching and playing baseball, photography and spending time with his wife and six children. |

John C. Eggenberger, MD

Dr. Eggenberger, born in Detroit Michigan, completed his undergraduate studies and medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1985. He subsequently completed his residency at the University of Michigan as well. In 1992, he did a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Eggenberger is board certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery as well as General Surgery. His special interests include colon and rectal cancer, endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and complicated diverticular bowel disease.
Dr. Eggenberger enjoys U of M football, golf, exercising, reading and spending time with his family. |

Amalia J. Stefanou, M.D.
 |
Dr. Stefanou is originally from the Detroit area having completed her medical education at Wayne State University and then her general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. She then went on to complete a colon and rectal surgery residency at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County/University of Illinois Chicago in Chicago, IL. Here she had the opportunity to learn advanced laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, as well as management of complex anorectal disease. Dr. Stefanou especially has an interest in laparoscopy for colon and rectal cancer, pelvic floor disorders and pouch operations.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son, cooking, and traveling. |

Wallace A. Arneson, MD
 |
Dr. Arneson, born in South Dakota, completed his undergraduate studies at Carleton College in Northfield Minnesota in 1970. He then obtained his medical degree from the Harvard School of Medicine in 1974. He went on to complete his residency at the University of Michigan in 1980. He is board certified in General Surgery and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan with special interest in breast and endocrine disease.
Dr. Arneson,when not spending time with his family, is very active in competitive swimming. |

Randall P. Desrochers, MD

Dr. Desrochers, born in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, completed his undergraduate studies and medical degree from University of Michigan in 1981. He subsequently completed his residency in General Surgery at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1986. Dr Desrochers also served as major in the United States Army and he is board certified in General Surgery. His special clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Desrochers enjoys cycling, ice hockey, reading and his family. |

Dr. Kapur, MD

Dr. Kapur completed her undergraduate studies at University of Illinois-Chicago and continued at the university to obtain her medical degree in 2004. She subsequently completed her residency at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor in 2009. She then completed a minimally invasive foregut fellowship in 2010 with the Swedish Health Services in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Kapur is board certified in General Surgery. Her special interests are minimally invasive and robotic surgery. She is fluent in Hindi and Urdu.
Dr. Kapur enjoys the Michigan outdoors and reading.

Beth C. Kimball, MD

Beth C. Kimball, MD, FACS is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in thyroid, parathyroid, and breast diseases. She earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago and completed her residency at the University of Michigan in 1997. Dr. Kimball is a member of the Center for Breast Health at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. She has been named a “Top Doc” in Breast Surgery by metropolitan Detroit’s HOUR magazine in 2010 and 2011 and a “Top Doc” in General Surgery in 2011. Dr. Kimball performs over 150 thyroid/parathyroid operations annually which puts her in the top 1% category in the United States with respect to surgical volume.
Dr. Kimball is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan and is also on the teaching faculties of Wayne State and the University of Toledo. She has been a member of the teaching faculty of the St. Joseph Mercy General Surgery Residency for 15 years. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Michigan State Medical Society.
Dr. Kimball strives to give each patient superior surgical care with the compassion and respect each patient deserves. In her spare time, Dr. Kimball and her husband are busy with their three sons and their golden retriever, Brody.

Edward D. Kreske, MD

Dr. Kreske was born in Jackson, Michigan. He was raised in Ann Arbor and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in 1988. He obtained his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He subsequently completed his residency at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in 2001. He went on to complete a fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington Massachusetts in 2003. He is board certified in General Surgery. His areas of interests are in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
Dr. Kreske and his wife have four children. In his spare time, he enjoys many athletic and outdoor activities with the kids. He is learning to play ice hockey with limited success to date. |

Dr. Mazzeo, born in Detroit Michigan, completed his undergraduate studies and medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1978. He completed his residency at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1983. Dr. Mazzeo is board certified in General Surgery and is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He has special interest in billiary disease and hernia repair.
Dr. Mazzeo is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys spending time with his dogs and his family. |

Richard A. Pomerantz, MD

Dr. Pomerantz, born in Fort Wayne Indiana, completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in 1976. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago Illinois in 1980. He did his residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Pomeratnz is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He has a special interest in diseases of the breast and gallbladder along with hernias and trauma/ critical care.
Dr. Pomerantz enjoys riding bikes for recreation, working out at the gym, karate, and spending time with his family. |

Vascular:
Ann Eschelbach, ACNP-BC

Ann Eschelbach, ACNP-BC was born in Jackson, Michigan. She is a certified nurse practitioner that partners very closely with the vascular surgeons of AGVS to provide patient centered care and treatment of conditions and diseases relating to arteries and veins. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Eastern Michigan University in 1993. She obtained her Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 2005. She is board certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Her special interests include vascular disease and lymphedema along with interventional radiology.
Ann enjoys spending time with her family, doing outdoor activities, walking and reading.

Brian G. Halloran, MD

Dr. Halloran, raised in Indianapolis, completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana in 1987. He obtained his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis Indiana in 1991. He subsequently completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha Nebraska in 1998. In 2000, he went on to complete a fellowship in Vascular Surgery from the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Halloran is board certified in Vascular Surgery and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He has special interest in carotid artery disease, diabetic foot ulcers, and surgical education.
Dr. Halloran very much enjoys being a spectator at his children’s events as well as running, listening to jazz and watching European soccer. |

Michael J. Heidenreich, MD

Dr. Heidenreich, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1992. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1996. He subsequently completed his residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001. In 2003, he went on to complete a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Systems in Baltimore Maryland. Dr Heidenreich is board certified in General and Vascular Surgery as well as being an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. His special interests are management of aortic aneurysms, cerebrovascular occlusive disease, and lower extremity occlusive disease with both open and endovascular techniques.
Dr. Heidenreich enjoys spending time with his family and with many outdoor sports. |

Chinmaya S. Shelgikar, MD

Dr. Shelgikar, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, completed his undergraduate studies in 1997 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison Wisconsin. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee in 2001. He subsequently completed his residency at the University of Louisville in Louisville Kentucky in 2007. He has done two fellowships- Interventional Radiology in 2005 at Emory University in Atlanta Georgia and Vascular Surgery in 2009 at the University of Utah, Sault Lake City Utah. Dr. Shelgikar is board certified in General Surgery and board eligible in Vascular Surgery. His special interests include endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms as well as lower extremity, renal and visceral occlusive disease.
Dr. Shelgikar enjoys spending time with his family listening to 1970’s music, traveling, hiking, and architecture. |

Walter M. Whitehouse, Jr., MD

Dr. Whitehouse, born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, completed his undergraduate studies at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware Ohio in 1969. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1973 as well as completing his General Surgery residency there in 1978. He then completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the University of Chicago in 1979. Dr. Whitehouse is board certified in Vascular Surgery and is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. He has special interest in cerebrovascular disease, visceral arterial occlusive disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms and thoracic outlet syndrome.
