Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a simple safe procedure that makes a man sterile (unable to father a child). It is the most effective birth control method for men. Candidates should understand a vasectomy is considered a permanent form of birth control. Once you have made the decision that your family is complete and a vasectomy is right for you, call our office at 734-712-8100 to schedule an appointment.

When you call our office to schedule your vasectomy, please have your insurance and credit card information available. It is your responsibility to call your insurance agency to see how much, if any, of the procedure is covered. A vasectomy at Huron Valley Urology is $755 and must be paid in full prior to service. Please be aware that if you should cancel your vasectomy within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment, you will be charged $150 to your credit card.

Preparing For Your Vasectomy

After you call the office and schedule your appointment you will receive a packet of information in the mail to read over and complete. In this packet you will find a consent form that you must sign to give your doctor permission to do the procedure. If you are married your wife must also sign this form. It will also state that you understand that a vasectomy is not guaranteed to make you sterile, as there is a very unlikely possibility that the vas deferens could reconnect in the future despite our separation to them and tying them off.

It is important that you stop taking any form of a blood thinning medication that you may be taking on a regular basis 7-10 days prior to your vasectomy. These include but are not exclusive to:

Aspirin

Ibuprofen

Coumadin

Plavix

Aggranox

For pain relief you may take Tylenol.

You must shave all the hair from the entire scrotum the day before or on the day of your vasectomy.

DO NOT USE AN ELECTRICAL RAZOR.

After shaving the area, thoroughly wash the penis and scrotum. Then shower or bathe to remove all loose hairs.

During Your Vasectomy

  • You'll be asked to undress and lie on a table.
  • To prevent pain during surgery, you’ll be given an injection of local anesthetic in your scrotum or lower groin.
  • Once the area is numb, one or two small incisions are made in the scrotum. This may be done with a scalpel or with a pointed clamp (no-scalpel method).
  • The vas deferens are lifted through the incision and cut. The ends of the vas are then sealed off using one of several methods.

  • If needed, the incision is closed with stitches.

  • You can rest for a while until you’re ready to go home.

*The entire procedure usually lasts about 30 minutes.

Recovery After Your Vasectomy

For about a week, your scrotum may look bruised and slightly swollen. You may also have a small amount of bloody discharge from the incision. This is normal.

  • Take it easy as much as possible and avoid lifting more than ten pounds for the first 2 days.
  • Wear an athletic supporter or snug cotton briefs for support.
  • Reduce swelling by placing an ice pack or bag of frozen peas in a thin towel. Then place the towel on your scrotum.
  • Take medications with acetaminophen (such as Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol) to relieve any discomfort. You can use ibuprofen, or naproxen starting the day after your vasectomy.
  • You may bath/shower the day after your vasectomy.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or exercise for 5 days.
  • Ask your doctor how long to wait before having sex again.

Remember: You must use another form of birth control until we confirm you are sterile.

Call your doctor if you notice any of the following after surgery:

  • Increasing pain or swelling in your scrotum
  • A large black-and-blue area, or a growing lump
  • Fever or chills
  • Increasing redness or drainage of the incision
  • Trouble urinating

Sex After Your Vasectomy

After a vasectomy, some active sperm still remain in your semen. It will take time and many ejaculations before the sperm are completely gone. On average it will take 15-20 ejaculations until there is no longer sperm in the semen. During this period, you must use another birth control method to prevent pregnancy.

To make sure no sperm are left in your semen, you’ll need to have one or more semen analysis. To schedule a follow up semen analysis, call our office at 734-712-8100. You do not need to stay for this. You will simply be dropping off the semen sample. Your Doctor will then examine the sample under a microscope. Your sample should not be more than 4 hours old when brought into the office.
